Solar in Aberdeen — How It Works

Aberdeen averages around 1,250 sunshine hours annually. A well-designed system with battery storage captures that generation, stores it for evening use, and exports the surplus for income

We design every system around your actual consumption data and your specific roof. Not templates. Not packages. Your home, your design.

Aberdeen Properties and Solar
What You Need to Know

Aberdeen’s housing stock is varied granite terraces in the city centre, modern builds in Westhill, suburban homes across Bridge of Don and Peterculter, rural properties in Aberdeenshire.

Granite terraces

Durable roofs, often south-facing. Good candidates for solar. Granite aesthetics benefit from all-black panels if desired. Granite construction is robust and suitable for modern solar mounting systems.

Modern suburban homes

Typically larger roof areas and straightforward access. Often ideal for solar systems. Modern construction standards make installation efficient and clean.

Rural Aberdeenshire properties

Space for larger systems. Shading from trees requires detailed assessment. Excellent south-facing opportunities often available in rural locations.
Coastal salt spray can affect panel cleaning frequency. We advise on maintenance schedules specific to Aberdeen’s location. Roof orientation and shading matter significantly. South, south-west, and south-east facing roofs deliver strongest yields. We use thermal imaging and satellite data to model your specific property before quoting.

What We Install in Aberdeen Properties

SOLAR PV

Roof-Mounted Panels

Sized to your consumption and roof capacity. Most Aberdeen family homes benefit from 6–10 kWp systems. We work with Tier 1 panels carrying 25-year linear performance guarantees. All-black panels available for properties where aesthetics matter particularly relevant for Aberdeen’s granite properties.

Battery Storage

EcoFlow and Sigenergy

Without battery storage, you use solar only when the sun shines. With a battery, you’re drawing on your own stored generation throughout the evening and into the night. Self-sufficiency typically rises from around 30% to 70–80%. For Aberdeen’s variable weather, this extends the value of your system year-round.

EV Charging

EV Charging

Pair an EV charger with your solar system and you’re fuelling your car on electricity your roof generated. For Aberdeen commuters, the combined saving on electricity and fuel costs is substantial.

Earn from your roof

The Smart Export Guarantee

Every unit of electricity your system generates but doesn’t use is exported to the grid. Under the Smart Export Guarantee, your energy supplier is legally required to pay you for it.

This isn’t a government grant or a subsidy scheme. It’s income your roof earns. Once your EVOLV installation is MCS-certified as every one of ours is you register with an SEG-licensed supplier and start receiving payments.

In a system sized correctly for an Aberdeen home, surplus generation earns meaningful annual income on top of the bill saving. We’ll help you choose the right SEG tariff. The rates vary by supplier and tariff type getting this right over the system’s 25-year life makes a significant cumulative difference.

In a system sized correctly for an Edinburgh home, surplus generation earns meaningful annual income on top of the bill saving. Our case study customer added £226/yr in SEG income to an already-eliminated electricity bill.

The Grid Cost

That Doesn’t Stop Rising

In 2021, the average UK electricity unit rate was around 14p/kWh. Today it’s nearly double that. The trajectory is clear  and it only makes the case for solar stronger with every passing year.

Your solar system locks in decades of electricity at zero marginal cost. While the grid bill for every non-solar household keeps rising, your generation costs you nothing extra in year five, year ten, or year twenty.

FAQ

Aberdeen Solar FAQ

Do solar panels work in Aberdeen given the coastal location?

Yes, absolutely. Aberdeen averages around 1,250 sunshine hours annually. Modern solar panels generate from daylight not just direct sunshine and coastal locations actually benefit from reflected light off the sea. We use real yield modelling for your specific postcode, roof pitch, orientation, and shading conditions. A correctly sized Aberdeen system will typically cover significant household electricity demand and often generate a surplus for export.

No. Modern solar panels are designed to withstand harsh coastal conditions. The protective glass and aluminium frames are extremely durable. However, salt spray does mean panels benefit from periodic professional cleaning. We recommend a professional clean every 2–3 years for coastal properties more frequently if in very exposed locations. The cost is minimal compared to the savings your system generates. Regular cleaning maintains optimal performance. We advise on maintenance schedules specific to your property’s coastal exposure.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) manages the distribution network across Aberdeen and the northeast. All solar installations above 3.68 kW require a G99 grid notification submitted to SSEN before installation. Smaller systems use the G98 route (simpler process). We handle all DNO applications on your behalf you don’t need to contact SSEN directly. We manage the entire grid notification process.

From your first free assessment to switch-on: typically 8–12 weeks total. The breakdown: assessment and design (1 week), Building Standards approval (2 weeks), material ordering and preparation (2 weeks), on-site installation (2–3 days), Building Standards inspection (2 weeks), SSEN grid approval (2–4 weeks), SEG registration and activation (1 week). However, you start generating and saving from week 5 when we commission your system the remaining weeks are regulatory approvals happening in parallel. We provide a detailed timeline at assessment stage.

Yes particularly for coastal properties. Without a battery, you only benefit from solar when the sun is shining and you’re home to use it. A battery stores surplus generation from daytime and powers your home through the evening and night. It also provides resilience against grid outages. In Aberdeen’s variable weather and coastal conditions, a battery significantly extends the value of your system year-round. Battery systems also allow you to maximize your Solar Export income by shifting consumption to optimal times.

The SEG requires energy suppliers to pay you for every unit of electricity you export to the grid. Once your system is MCS-certified as all EVOLV installs are you’re eligible to register with an SEG-licensed supplier and start earning. Current rates vary between 12–18p per kWh depending on supplier and tariff type. For an average-sized Aberdeen system, annual export income ranges from £150–£400 depending on system size and your consumption patterns. Multiple tariff options are available; we help you select the right one for your system and usage profile.
